Other Gifts
- Gifts of Stocks or Securities
- Gifts of Capital Assets
- Gifts of Life Insurance
- Pledge over multiple years
- Creation of Special Memorial Fund
Making a gift of stock or securities is a convenient way for you to make a sizeable charitable contribution while realizing valuable tax benefits. Since changes in 2006 to the federal tax treatment of donations of stock, gifts of stock have become very beneficial to donors and are making significant inroads as a preferred method of supporting charities. In a nutshell, a donor who has highly appreciated securities (publicly-traded stock) which would normally attract a large taxable capital gain if sold, can now donate the shares to a charity, receive a tax credit based on the fair market value, and be exempted from all of the capital gains tax that would otherwise apply. Please note: we recommend you consult with your financial, tax or legal advisors to explore specific benefits to your portfolio before making gifts of securities.
Using real estate, such as your home, farm, or commercial property to fund a gift allows you to preserve your cash assets, receive significant tax advantages, and perhaps make a larger charitable gift than anticipated.
Donating your life insurance could be a wonderful way to fulfill your desire to support our work. By making Hospice Calgary the beneficiary of an existing policy, you make good use of your resources and expand your ability to make a significant gift.
Again, it is always best to contact your financial advisor regarding contributions such as those noted under Other Gifts.
Wills & Estates
- Bequests (see sample below)
How do I name Hospice Calgary as a beneficiary of my will or estate plan? If you would like to include Hospice Calgary in your estate plans through a will or trust, we recommend you work with your legal counsel. You can either establish a new will or trust or make an amendment to an existing document. The sample language below advises Hospice Calgary’s Board of Directors to use the funds as deemed most beneficial to the agency, however, if you wish to restrict your gift to a specific program or purpose, you may do so.
The following statement may be helpful in directing a future gift: "I hereby give to Hospice Calgary Society (Charitable Registration #118963669RR0001), located at 1245 - 70 Avenue S.E., Calgary, Alberta, Canada, T2H 2X8, the sum of $_________ or _________% of my estate, or property herein described, to be used as its Board of Directors deem advisable for the benefit of Hospice Calgary."
